Quad Damage
Four times the pain, zero times the mercy.
Quad Damage is a timed offensive power-up that appears throughout the Quake franchise, first introduced in the original Quake (1996) and carried forward into Quake II, Quake III Arena, Quake IV, and Quake Champions. When a player collects it, every weapon they fire deals four times its normal damage for the duration of the effect, making it one of the most sought-after pickups in competitive multiplayer.

Lore & Background
In the world of the Quake series, the blue-glowing spheres scattered across arenas and dungeon maps are remnants of the same arcane energy that fuels the Dark Lord's dominion over the Rift. Quad Damage, as it is colloquially known, channels a concentrated burst of that raw force into the wielder's weapons, temporarily overloading every projectile, blade, and blast with quadruple force. The effect is indiscriminate: a humble nail gun becomes a shotgun of annihilation, a rocket launcher becomes a tactical nuke, and a chainsaw becomes a meat grinder of apocalyptic proportions.
In Their Own Story
The arena was empty except for the hum of the server and the faint blue pulse at the far end of the corridor. You could see it from the spawn—small, steady, patient. Three others had already died reaching for it, their ragdolls still tumbling in slow arcs. You checked your frag count. Checked your ammo. Checked the minimap for the one player still alive, still circling, still waiting. You sprinted. The corridor was long, the walls close, the blue light growing with every stride. You rounded the final corner, saw the orb hovering on its little pedestal, and reached out. The world sharpened. Your shotgun felt heavier, hotter, alive. Somewhere behind you, a rocket screamed through the air and detonated against the wall, sending a shower of sparks and dust into the blue glow. You turned, racked the slide, and smiled. Thirty seconds. That was all you needed.
Reader's Guide
Damage: Quad Damage does not add a flat bonus; it multiplies the base damage of whatever weapon you are holding by a factor of four. A weapon that normally deals 10 damage will deal 40. This applies to every weapon in your loadout simultaneously—shotguns, rockets, nails, grenades, blades—so the tactical value scales with the weapon you choose to carry into the pickup.
Ammo type: None. Quad Damage is a passive modifier. It does not consume its own resource and does not alter your weapon's ammo pool. You still need bullets, rockets, or nails to fire.
Firing mode: Unchanged. The pickup does not alter rate of fire, spread, projectile speed, or firing mode. It purely amplifies the damage number on impact. A full-auto weapon fires at the same rate but hits four times harder.
Where it spawns: In classic Quake maps, the blue orb is typically placed in a single, fixed location per map—often in a somewhat exposed or contested area to create a natural chokepoint. In Quake Champions, it appears as a timed power-up that respawns at set intervals and can be found at map-specific locations, sometimes requiring a short traversal or a risky path to reach.
Community reputation: Quad Damage is one of the most iconic and meme-able pickups in FPS history. The "blue orb" is instantly recognizable. In Quake III and Quake Champions lobbies, players will call out "quad" the instant it spawns, and the frantic scramble to reach it is a staple of competitive play. The phrase "I got quad" carries a specific weight of triumph. It is also the go-to example when explaining power-ups to newcomers: "It's the blue thing that makes you hit four times harder."
Did You Know?
- Quad Damage is one of only three classic power-ups in the original Quake (1996), alongside Invulnerability and Speed, and it is the only one that is purely offensive rather than defensive or mobility-based.
- Because it multiplies rather than adds, Quad Damage makes low-damage weapons disproportionately powerful—a nail gun under Quad can out-damage a rocket launcher at close range, fundamentally shifting weapon choice during
- The blue-glowing orb visual for Quad Damage has remained essentially unchanged from the original 1996 release through Quake Champions, making it one of the most visually consistent pickup icons in the entire franchise.
- In competitive Quake III and Quake Champions, the single Quad Damage spawn point on a map effectively dictates the flow of the entire match, as control of the orb's location often determines which player or team holds th
