In Quake's single-player narrative, the player assumes the role of a scientist who awakens in a subterranean research facility after a catastrophic experiment. The facility is overrun by demonic entities summoned by a being known as the Dark Lord. The player must fight through industrial laboratories, flooded catacombs, and hellish realms, collecting artifacts and defeating increasingly powerful demons to reach the Dark Lord's throne.
The game's world blends sterile, fluorescent-lit lab corridors with organic, fleshy caverns and lava-choked hellscape, a visual contrast that became iconic to the title.
